Psychological Skills Training - Part One

Psychological Skills – Article One: The ULTRA You!

Our greatest gift is our mind.  When we acquire constructive knowledge that assimilates into our being and positively changes our behaviour, we have become our own person.  We are smart and capable of anything!  To the degree we can vividly imagine what we want in our mind, will significant influence the probability of becoming your personal best.  This is the Law of the Dominant Thought (Mack, Gary. Mind Gym, p.11).

However, when you dwell upon a mistake (E.g: lacking fitness for a race) you imprint this image upon your mind.  Lou Tice from the Pacific Institute aptly illustrates this point: “Your subconscious mind doesn’t care what thoughts you store there, its job is to ensure you behave and act the way you know yourself to be”.  You choose to empower yourself with positive self-talk!  Instead, install an affirmation: “Relaxed, patient and strong I find limitless endurance and power in my possession”.  Chant this to yourself in your next triathlon or ultramarathon!

Realistic goals help to get the affirmation process going.  Clear mental hygiene will help you focus on achievement like you never thought possible.  Efficacy serves a strong purpose when you overcome an obstacle the previously thought was unattainable. Visualization towards your next goal becomes more vivid if you can transfer your emotional reward (feelings of accomplishment) to your next challenge. Remember Dick Hoyt helping his severely handicapped son complete the Ironman.  Emotion is the most powerful motivator!
